Affordable and Accessible Healthcare for Rural Iowa

As a veterinarian, I often provide healthcare to countless pets and animals throughout HD82 and the surrounding areas. So when I hear on the phone that voters are going bankrupt to pay for life-saving medications, or having to drive long distances for emergency visits, I’m absolutely horrified. In the State House, I’ll fight for more affordable and accessible healthcare because if our critters can get the quality care they deserve, then so should we.

Affordable Healthcare

In our state, it’s unfortunate that there are so many who don’t have the means to afford doctors visits, prescription drugs, and other healthcare-related needs. In the statehouse, I’ll work to strengthen the already existing systems in place and provide more transparency around the costs that we’re paying. That means pushing for policies like:

  • Protecting Iowans who have pre-existing conditions

  • Reversing the privatization of Medicaid -- which is currently run by out-of-state, for-profit insurance companies

  • Bringing down the cost of prescription drugs

  • Expanding price transparency around prescription drugs, providing more information to consumers around the cost of their drugs and planned price increases or decreases

Accessible Healthcare

In our rural towns, we often find ourselves losing out on vital healthcare access simply because of how far we are from the nearest urban center. That’s not right. In Des Moines, I’ll fight for our rural communities by supporting policies that:

  • Increase access to mental healthcare in rural communities

  • Incentivize more pharmacies to expand tele-medicine and tele-pharmacy services

  • Incentivize medical professionals, and recent graduates, to work in rural counties

  • Expand ambulance services to rural communities

  • Ensure those who need Medicaid benefits are able to receive them in a timely manner

COVID-19 Preparation

Given the severity of the pandemic and the lack of a coordinated federal response, the state government plays an outsized role in controlling the spread of COVID-19 and enacting policies that are in line with credible organizations such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC). In the state legislature, I’ll plan on:

  • Listening to medical experts and public health officials, and working with them to create policy solutions

  • Ensuring communities have the necessary PPE equipment for doctors, nurses, healthcare workers, and those most in need of protection

  • Partnering with local elected officials to get them the resources and equipment they need to maintain a safe, healthy environment for their respective communities

The current lack of affordable and accessible healthcare, particularly in our rural communities, is deeply concerning and needs to be dealt with swiftly. In the State House, I’ll fight for everyone’s right to the best quality healthcare because that’s what I’ve done my whole life.
